Forgetting to take medication can be a major barrier to successful treatment; this problem is exacerbated when the treatment dosing is infrequent.
Oral fluconazole is often used to treat onychomycosis. Dosing is 150 mg weekly until the whole nail grows out, which can take up to 18 months. This long treatment duration and weekly, rather than daily, dosing means that successful treatment with fluconazole is challenging, and highly dependent on patient adherence to the schedule.
Previous studies have shown that text reminders can improve patient adherence to treatment. Therefore, in a recent paper, Krysta Lin and Dr. Shari Lipner propose educating patients in using mobile phone reminder systems, such as alarms or text notifications, as a solution to patients forgetting to take their medication.
